Marion Alice (Balderson) Conrad was born July 31, 1923 to Benjamin Homer and Ida Mae (Hurst)
Balderson in Pickrell, Nebraska.  She, with her 12 brothers and sisters, was raised on a farm near
Pickrell, where she also taught school for a time.

On June  6, 1948, she married Harold L. Conrad at her home and they lived in Beatrice.  The
Conrad’s moved to Leigh in 1955, when they purchased the Leigh World.  Marion worked at the
newspaper office as a copy reporter, proof reader, and jack-of-all-trades.  The Conrad’s raised
three children, June, Janice and Steve.

While in Leigh, Marion was active in the Leigh Woman’s Club and the American Legion
Auxiliary.  A member of the First Congregational/United Church of Christ Church in Leigh, she was
active in the Ladies Guild, taught Sunday School, sang in choir and held various church offices.
Upon the closing of the Congregational Church, Marion joined St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Marion also served as a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother.  She was a
promoter of Hands of Friendship and enjoyed attending musical programs in which her children,
grandchildren and great grandchildren were participating.  Being raised with seven brothers, she
soon learned to love sports and was a life-long Nebraska football fan.

In later years, Marion enjoyed helping make quilts at St. John’s and also working on crafts for
the Christmas Festival.

Marion resided in Countryside Home in Madison for the past ten years.  While in Madison, she
showed the musical side of her personality by entertaining the nurses with her renditions of “You are
my Sunshine” and the “Nebraska Fight Song” and many others right up until her death.

Marion will long be remembered for her fried chicken and Christmas cookies.
