Norma Ione (Neuhaus) Fuhr was born at the Columbus Hospital on September 8, 1929, and died peacefully at Brookestone in Columbus on June 19, 2025.
She was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Leigh. Her childhood was spent on farms south of Leigh, then for 5 years near Creston where she was confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and attended 1 semester at Creston High School. Her family moved back to Leigh where she graduated at Leigh High School in 1947. She taught country school after normal training and a summer at Midland College.
On June 9, 1949, she married her lifetime mate of 72 years, Gordon Fuhr, at St John’s Lutheran Church in Leigh. They farmed east of Leigh until retirement in 2003 when their family assisted with a home renovation, and they moved into Leigh.
As members of St. John’s, Norma and Gordon served as Luther League sponsors for three 5 -year terms. She was a member of Sunday School teachers, church library and ELCW. She also greatly enjoyed working with the community on the Centennial Drama and Community development.
Her most meaningful occupation away from home, was working for the Nebraska Extension Service for over 20 years, first working with limited-income families. Her heart was repeatedly touched as she taught nutrition and assisted in their many needs. She also impacted many lives through 4-H, creating /offering projects and introducing enrichment programs in the schools.
Other personal interests included sewing, cake decorating and oil painting. The last two she shared with others by teaching classes. A special joy came to her in seeing others excited about learning new skills. She enjoyed making wedding cakes for many years.
She became interested in her daughter’s concern for children not being supported in their grief. Many hours were spent helping with research, surveys, small grants and program development. Later, sewing quilts of blocks made by grieving families and making other items for their program. Mourning Hope has continued to be a special interest for over 35 years.
She always enjoyed camping and fishing, picnics and mountain trips with family. Cousin’s parties and sleep overs were especially important with the grands and great-grands. Later in life, winter trips to Texas brought new friendships and experiences such as painting class and mission projects. Later, card playing, bird and squirrel watching, colorful sunsets and enjoying the world at their doorstep…all God’s Blessings! The foundation of her life was her faith in God and living it out each day.
Although she had many interests, her husband & family were her deepest love and greatest joy! Survived by her children; Larry, Calvin (Sue), & Pam (John) Dinneen; grandchildren; Dave (Tonya) Fuhr, Jennifer (Scott) Hall, Kim (Scott) Sucha, Melissa (Dustin) Brabec, John (Victoria) Dinneen, Kristen (Andrew) Sievert, Matthew (Alexa) Dinneen; great grandchildren; Jeremy (Tia) Fuhr, Elizabeth (Chris) Claren, Shelby Fuhr (fiancé’ Sheldon Oenbring), Abbi & Natalie Brabec, Adam Sucha, Annelise Dinneen, Liam, Aubrey, Myles and Mackenzie Sievert; great-great grandchildren; Chas, Thatcher, Hazel and Sybil Fuhr, Ryker, Baylor and Layla Claren.
