Ernie was born February 23, 1920 in Julesburg, Colorado to Elmer and Caroline(Muhle) Mayhew. He moved to Schuyler as a young child. He graduated from Schuyler High School in 1938 and entered the U.S. Navy on January 16, 1942 serving on the U.S.S. Wichita during WWII as a radar man 1st Class. He was awarded 8 Star Campaign Badges for his participation in Asian/Pacific and European/African missions. Ernie married Jean Balmer on December 28, 1953 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Schuyler. He worked for Wagner Mills, Inc. for 36 years and after retirement worked part time for the City of Schuyler's Oak Ballroom and Parks Department. He was a resident of Schuyler until 2003, when he and his wife Jean moved to Loveland, Colorado to be closer to their children. Ernie was a life member of the Schuyler V.F.W. Post #4836, was a Color Guard member and permanent member of Schuyler American Legion Post #47. Ernie was called to our Lord on November 9, 2008 at the North Shore Health and Rehab Facility in Loveland, Colorado. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean Mayhew, four children, Doug(Pam) of Broomfield, CO, Carmen(Bob) Sedlacek of Loveland, Rick(Deb) of Loveland, Kim Mayhew(Jeff Killian) of Fort Collins, five grandchildren, Jenny(Steve) Kuzmich, Brad Mayhew, Tyler Mayhew, Carla Killian and Chris Killian, great-grandaughter Addyson Kuzmich and one sister, Etta(Harold) McDuffee of Fremont, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Harold and Delbert Mayhew. |
