Martin E. Birkel was born September 6, 1952 to Thomas and Betty (Martin) Birkel in David City, Nebraska. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Aquinas High School in 1971.
In 1972 Marty married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Susan Sylvester. To this union, 3 children were born. Heath, Heather, and Hadley.
Marty was a jack of all trades. There wasn’t much he couldn’t do. From working on cars, (the louder the better), having a green thumb, to building houses, and everything in between. He took great pride in helping anyone he could. It was the code he lived by.
Marty loved the Niobrara River and all it had to offer. Whether it was milking cows, fishing, floating, or the annual hunting trips with his friends. It was one of his happy places. Another was owning and operating road trip tours after semi retirement with Susan. His love for people and the casino was a perfect combination. It was here they met many people that became lifelong friends. Marty never met a stranger. If he could talk to you now, he would say “Be happy and have fun. That’s what it’s all about.”.
Marty is survived by his wife, Susan Birkel, son, Heath (Justina) Birkel, son, Hadley, former daughter-in-law, Tena Birkel, grandchildren: Jazmen, Bo & Walker Birkel, siblings: Pat (Kerwin) Brown of Metamora, Illinois, Deb (Jim) Litchfield of Wakefield, Nebraska, Sandy (Terry) Litchfield of Denver, Colorado, Bob (Theresa) Birkel of Dwight, Nebraska, as well as several nieces and nephews and hundreds of friends.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Heather Birkel, parents, Tom and Betty Birkel, in-laws, Morris and Betty Sylvester, and siblings, Virginia, Leo, Don, and Steve Birkel.
