Dan Ingwersen passed away on July 17, 2024 in Omaha, Nebraska. He leaves behind a devastated family and many friends. Dan was born on September 3rd, 1960 in David City, Nebraska, the seventh child of William Donald and Joan Marie (Mulick) Ingwersen. He attended St. Mary’s grade school and Aquinas High School, graduating in 1978. He was his class president and had many close and dear, lifelong friends from those years. He worked with his dad and brothers in masonry construction throughout his adolescence and was very proud of working as a family. He often indicated every house they worked on throughout Butler County – “we did that basement, we did that brickwork – Dad built that grotto”.
Dan attended Wayne State College after high school, graduating in 1983. After college he had a number of interesting jobs including recruiting for Nebraska College of Business and Black Hills Community College. He announced races at Yamada Race Way with his good friend, Pat Ptacek, during some of the summers. He continued in construction work, helping build David City High School and working for the Nebraska Game and Parks where he was involved in several projects including the reconstruction of the Bowring Ranch and building stables at Mahoney Park.
Dan married Marian Borgmann from Osmond, Nebraska in 1987 and returned to Wayne State College in 1990 where she was teaching. He completed his teaching credentials and substitute taught in the area and coached the Wisner-Pilger Legion baseball team. In 1993-94 he taught at Milligan High School and continued his coaching career, involved in football, girls’ basketball and track - taking the Lady Roosters basketball team to State for the first time in school history. He then moved to West Point Central Catholic where he taught and coached for nine years, building one of northeast Nebraska’s premier girls basketball programs. He was an outstanding coach. The Lady Blue Jays won six Conference Championships, six District Championships and a state championship under his direction. The family made their home just north of Wisner, Nebraska at that time.
In 2002 he returned to school to work on his Master’s degree and Administrative and Counseling credentials. He was the Principal at Wayne St. Mary’s elementary school for one year while also acting as an assistant coach to the Wayne State Lady Wildcat basketball team. He then was hired as the guidance counselor at Pender High School where he coached football and volleyball. He continued his education and was hired as the principal and elementary counselor at Ceresco Elementary in 2005. This position was a great fit for Dan as he got to talk to kids all day and they loved “Mr. I”. He often joked about being on the other side of the principal’s desk and thinking – “that’s all you did to get here?” remembering his own trips to the Principal’s Office as a student.
After leaving Ceresco Elementary, Dan spent two years as the Superintendent at Wilcox-Hildreth Public Schools where he accomplished the completion of three major building projects. He spent the last several years at Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer, back to working with elementary kids. Wherever he went, his students loved him.
Dan’s talents as a singer and storyteller impacted everyone who knew him. He often MC’d for various events, sang at weddings and funerals and, in recent years, was joined by his children in singing at various functions. He was the funniest man most of us will ever know.
Dan and Marian later divorced but together raised three wonderful children and he loved them so. Isaac and his fiancé, Holly Bingham, are in Mesa, Arizona. Ian and has wife Dee (Turner) and their son, Matej, live in Lincoln and Julia will start her 2nd year at UNO soon. Their dear son Henry died during birth in 2000.
Dan is survived by his children, grandson Matej,sisters and brother’s in law: Mary and Jim Sanely of Lincoln, Jeanne’ and Doug Osborn of David City and his brother and his wife, Don and Jenny Ingwersen of Brainard and many nieces and nephews and cousins and extended family. He was preceded in death by his son, Henry, his brothers, William James (Barb), Mark (Jeanne) and Richard; his parents Joan and Bill, his grandparents William Francis Ingwersen, Mildred Ingwersen Hookstra, James and Mable Mulick;
He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
