Regina “Jean” was born on July 19, 1942 in Abie, Nebraska to Edward Kopecky and Libbie (Shimerka) Kopecky. She went to school in Bruno, Nebraska; Kindergarten through 8th grade and then to David City Public High School. After high school she briefly worked at a bank in Lincoln; then Dale Electronics in Columbus. Jean married Dave Hanis on November 10, 1962 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Bruno, Nebraska. They made a home in Bruno and remained there for 63 years; as well as remaining very active members of the Catholic Church in Bruno.
Jean was a homemaker and a great mother; she took on several side jobs over the years. For 30 years she was the janitor of the Bruno Grade School. She also waitressed on frequent Saturdays at Marge’s Tavern in Bruno. During harvest Jean would also work in the office at the Bruno Co-op. As an active member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Jean served many roles. She was very active in Alter Society volunteering in many capacities. She helped on the Election Board and also was the President of the David City Public Alumni where she chaired the annual reunion.
Jean loved gardening and caring for her many flowers. People driving by would stop and comment on how beautiful her flower garden was. She was also a wonderful cook and enjoyed freezing and canning. Jean had to have her daily newspaper and work on the Word Jumble every morning. Jean and Dave enjoyed going to their favorite restaurants and visiting with their many friends. She was known to enjoy playing Bingo, Pickle Cards and friendly family pitch games.
Jean is survived by her husband Dave of Bruno; children Pam (John) Proskovec of Southlake, Texas, Lisa Archuleta of Evansville, Indiana, Scott (Trish) Hanis of Humphrey, Nebraska; brother Tom (Barb) Kopecky of David City, Nebraska; sister-in-law Joanne Stephens of New Orleans, Louisiana; grandchildren Tony (Danielle) Proskovec of Deerfield, Illinois, Danielle (Reece) Barnes of Boston, Massachusetts, Jack (Danielle) Proskovec of Euless, Texas, Anna Proskovec of Denver, Colorado, Mikaela Archuleta of Evansville, Indiana, Alex Archuleta and Sam Archuleta of Terre Haute, Indiana, Derek (Sam) Hanis of Columbus, Nebraska, Bret (Riley Jurgens) Hanis of Lincoln, Nebraska; and 4 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Libbie Kopecky, mother and father-in-law, Joe and Emily Hanis, sister Carol Wright, and brother-in-law Jerry Stephens.
