Lee was born on the family farm south of Bruno, Nebraska, on January 31, 1930 to his parents James J. Coufal and Martha H. (Kozisek) Coufal. He peacefully departed from this world on February 7, 2026, at the age of 96 years and 7 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Michael and his brother, Eugene. He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Jean (Lavicky); daughter Ann (Bob) Vozar; six grandchildren, Olivia Vozar, Ashley (Brandon) Roberts, Michael (Susi) Coufal, Bob Coufal, Jesse Coufal and Hannah Coufal, and great-grandchildren, Kelby, Kayle and Kole Coufal and brother-in-law John Lavicky. Lee received his schooling at Bruno Country Grade School and Brainard High School, graduating with the class of 1947. Lee met his wife, Jean, at a CYO dance in Dwight, and they were married at Assumption Catholic Church in Dwight on May 23, 1953.  Lee entered the Army on January 9, 1953. Immediately after their wedding, Lee and Jean moved to Fort Chaffee in Ft. Smith, Arkansas and lived on the army base for 3 months. It was the first time they had left Nebraska. Lee was then sent overseas and was stationed in Pusan, Korea. He was honorably discharged on December 7, 1954. When he returned home, Lee and Jean moved to Bruno to start their married life together. They moved to the farm where Lee was born and raised their two children there, Mike and Ann. Lee and Jean lived on the farm until late 2024, when they moved to Overland Park, Kansas, to live with their daughter and son- in-law, Ann and Bob. In October 2025, Lee and Jean moved to Santa Marta Retirement Community in Olathe, Kansas. Lee farmed until 2023, and loved farm life. His pride and joy were his cattle that he raised over the years. Over the years, Lee produced crops of corn, soybeans and alfalfa. He did custom work for area farmers. Lee was a life-long member of St. Anthony’s Parish in Bruno, Nebraska. Lee was a proud 66- year member of the American Legion Post 110 in Dwight, Nebraska. He was honored to be the Grand Marshall of the Dwight Czech Festival parade in 2024. Lee was also a life-time member of the Knights of Columbus.  Lee and Jean were big dancers and won many dance contests. They enjoyed going to area dances over the years and Lee especially loved polka dancing. They also loved to travel, and had many adventures to Mexico, Jamaica and all over the United States . Lee loved spending time with his family and attending his grandkid’s school events. He also loved Nebraska football and proudly wore his Husker shirts while living in Kansas.  As we bid farewell to Lee, let us remember the joy he brought to our lives. May his soul find eternal peace and a place next to God.

The family is grateful for all of Lee’s caregivers, Santa Marta staff and Catholic Community Hospice.
