Larry was born on March 25, 1947, in Atkinson, Nebraska, to Lloyd and Katherine (Hansen) Spence. He grew up in Atkinson, where he graduated from high school, and later proudly served his country in the United States National Guard for six years.

On October 5, 1969, Larry married the love of his life, Shirley Gaeth, at the First Presbyterian Church in Schuyler.  Together they built a beautiful life and raised two sons, Jay and Mark. Larry worked as a machinist at BD for over 40 years, and later at Hy Vee.  He earned an  associate degree in his 40's, showing his lifelong commitment to hard work and learning.

Larry lived life with energy and joy. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved blue rock shooting, deer and duck hunting, golf, and bowling. He was a  member of the Columbus Rifle Club and rarely turned down a chance to enjoy the great outdoors. At home, he found joy in cooking, pairing a good meal with a glass of wine, and cheering on his favorite action hero, Chuck Norris.

Larry had a gift for connecting with people. He never met a stranger—everyone he encountered became a friend. His greatest joy, though, was his family. He loved following his grandchildren’s activities, planning trips and travels with Shirley, and spending time with his great-granddaughter, Josie, whom he lovingly called “his baby”.

Larry’s memory will be cherished by his wife of 55 years, Shirley of Stanton; his sons, Jay (Kim) of Stanton and Mark of Chicago; his grandchildren, Amber (PJ) Anderson, Allie (Ashton) Flood, Arynn Spence, Aaxel Spence, and Aaden Spence, all of Stanton; and his "baby" , Josie Anderson. He is also survived by his sister-in law and her husband, Donna and Doug Bruce of Hastings; brother-in-law, Jim Ostrander of Ord; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Katherine Spence; parents-in-law, Don and Marge Gaeth; and his sister, Betty Ostrander.
