Mary P. Romshek was born February 1, 1939, in Bellwood, Nebraska to Sylvester and Arnola (Judevine) Demuth. She grew up on a farm south of Bellwood, helping her parents deliver fresh butter and milk to Bellwood residents and learning what it takes to be a farm kid. She attended Bellwood Grade School and High School.
On February 2, 1956, she married Joseph G. Romshek at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Bellwood. The marriage lasted 60 years until Joe passed away in 2016. With the exception of the past couple of months, Mary resided in the Bellwood area her entire life, raising her family and becoming a part of the fabric of the community.
An active community and church member, Mary supported many organizations. She was a lifetime member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, participating in the St. Peter’s PCCW, teaching CCD classes, singing in the choir, and leading prayer and song as a cantor. Mary was also a member and served office in both the American Legion Auxiliary and Bellwood Firemen’s Auxiliary. She also served on the Bellwood Centennial Committee, was a Girl Scout and 4-H leader, and volunteered as an election poll worker for many years. Mary was a seamstress and made dozens of quilts for Birth Right and the homeless.
After raising her 6 children, Mary worked as a para-professional at Bellwood Grade School and later worked at Region V providing support for clients with disabilities. She also worked as the village clerk for the Bellwood Township.
Mary enjoyed reading, sewing, solving crossword puzzles, playing cards, and listening to music. Her family has fond memories of singing old folk songs while Mary played the piano. Those who knew her could count on her natural inclination to be frank and straightforward. She will be remembered as a supportive wife, mother, grandmother, and good neighbor, and for her lifetime of service to others.
Mary is survived by daughters Michelle (Kent) Longenecker, David City; Amy (Bob Speicher) Romshek, Columbus; Mary Beth Tomcak, Bellwood; Jackie (Aaron Schmid) Romshek, Bellwood; sons Matt (Jami) Romshek, Lincoln; Andy (Patty) Romshek, Papillion; 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; her brother, Dan Demuth, Lincoln; brother- and sister-in-law Jack (Betty) Romshek, Bellwood; and many nieces and nephews.
