Memorials in care of the family

Katherine Ernst, lovingly known as Kak, was born on January 23, 1950, in Columbus, Nebraska, to James and Margaret "Maggie"  (Sinkula) Heavican. She grew up in Schuyler and graduated from Schuyler High School with the Class of 1968.

On April 17, 1971, she was united in marriage to Allen Ernst, and together they built a beautiful life centered on family, farming, faith, and community. They were blessed with two sons. For many years, Katherine devoted herself to being a farm wife, later working as a receptionist  for Dr. Mickey's eye center in Schuyler.

A lifelong member of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Kak also shared her time and talents as a 4-H leader for several years. She had a love for sports and rarely missed cheering on her favorite teams—the New York Yankees, Boston Celtics, Nebraska Husker football, and Volleyball. Above all, her greatest joy came from spending time with her grandchildren and attending their many activities.  She also enjoyed attending and participating in the county fair.

Kak is survived by her sons, Marty (April) Ernst of Schuyler and Patrick Ernst of Rockwell City, Iowa; her cherished grandchildren, Chloe Aragon-Ernst, McCoy Ernst, and Ada Ernst, all of Schuyler; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Elaine (Jim) Williams of Bellevue; her goddaughter, Joan (Scott) Sokol of Newman Grove; and her “grandbaby dog,” Ginger.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen, her parents, James and Margaret Heavican, In laws Melvin and Marcella Ernst, brother in law Randy Ernst, sister in law Nancy(Ernst) DeBaets, brother in law Larry DeBaets and sister in law Anita Ernst.
