Dorothy H. Thalken, 92, of Leigh, died Sunday, January 5, 2014, at the Golden Living Center in
Dorothy was born March 27, 1921, north of Richland on the family farm, to Daniel and
Minnie(Greaser) Bauman. She attended school through the eighth grade. On May 22, 1946, she
married LaVerne Thalken at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Schuyler. They lived in Leigh and she
and LaVerne ran the Corner Bar from 1962-1967. Prior to that, Dorothy was a stay at home mom and
did books for the Leigh Shipping Company and later did babysitting. She was always active and
enjoyed watching the grandkids and great-grandkids in all their activities. Dorothy was also an avid
bowler for many years. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Leigh Saddle Club.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, LaVerne of Columbus, three daughters;Donna(Kenny) Bolton,
Columbus, Rita Thalken of Lincoln and Rose Ann (Roger) Kuester, Creston, a sister, Sharon Bauman
of Creighton, 10 grandchildren;Renee(Mike) Whiting, Kerry Neuhaus, Tammy Osten, Leslie Eno and
fiance Mike Orvis, Tracy(Bret) Burtwhistle, Dennis(Wendy) Kuester, Blake Kuester and significant
other Megan Jindra, Trina(Jim) Benedict, Trudy Baxa, Roxann(Toby) Thompson, 19
great-grandchildren;Ben Wemhoff and significant other Tara, Talia Gentry, Ethan Neuhaus, Jasmine
Osten, Payton Rosendahl, Tori Osten, Hailey Thalken, Jayden Eno, Bree Burtwhistle, Avery Kuester,
Allison Whiting, Taylor Whiting and significant other Kerrin,Samantha Zrust, Jordan, Jeremy, Sydney
and Jessica Baxa and Eli and Emree Pilmore, and a great-great-granddaughter, Aubree Whiting.
She was preceded in death by her son, Dean in 1969, sisters Evelyn "Tootsie" Bray, Mildred Bruhn,
Ruth Tichota and Elzeda "Seedie" Gernstein and a brother, John Bauman.
