Joseph E. Sloup, 88, of Rising City, died Thursday, February 18, 2016, at david place in David City.

Joseph E. Sloup of Rising City was born August 6, 1927 to Emil and Anna (Hladky) Sloup near
Garrison, NE. He graduated from David City High School and later enlisted in the U.S. Army. Joseph
married Nadine (Rathje) on June 7, 1953.

Together Joe and Nadine spent 40 years running Joe's Texaco, which later became Joe's Sinclair. Joe
and Nadine were very active in civic activities and were instrumental in numerous city improvements
such as centennial celebrations, street projects, and the avenue of flags. They also organized the first
Rising City 4th of July Celebration, which has become an annual event for the city. Joe was an active,
lifelong member of First Lutheran Church. He also served many years on the Butler County Weed
Board, the Rising City Fire Department, the Rising City Town Board, and served as mayor for several
terms.

After his retirement Joe spent countless hours working in his large garden, tending his bees and sharing
his vegetables with family and friends throughout the community. Joe will always be remembered for
his tireless work ethic, friendliness toward everyone, and willingness to help anyone in need.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents Emil and Anna, wife Nadine, one brother Edward and four
sisters: Emma Nordmeyer, Mary Lulow, Rose Gaskill, and Helen West.

He is survived by children: Michael (Tamra) Sloup of Boca Raton, Florida, and daughter Trudy
(Terry) Samek of David City; six grandchildren: Abby, Alexis, Tyler, Mason, Summer and Myles; two
great-grandchildren: Dylan and Maddox; three sisters: Anne Woolsey, Darlene Shippen, and Beverly
Dwyer.
