Jerald E. "Jake" Held, 91, of Leigh, died Christmas Day at the Stanton Healthcare Center in Stanton.

Jerald E. Held was born south of Leigh, Nebraska, August 19, 1924, to Ernest and Flossie(Kloppel) Held. He attended area schools and graduated from Leigh High School. In 1943, Jake enlisted in the United States Navy as a Radarman 2nd Class. Much of his time was spent in Brunswick, Maine, training British Fighter Pilots in intercept work. He was Honorably discharged on May 24, 1946.
Jake married Betty Busse on January 17, 1948, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Leigh. They borrowed $2400 in 1950 to begin farming and farmed south of Leigh until moving to town in 1987. Jake loved spending time with the family, fishing, hunting and visiting the farm. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he had served on the Church Council,Life Member of Sucha Post #302 of the American Legion (63 years), past Commander and served faithfully with the Honor Guard. He had served on school boards of Districts 43, 20 and 5R..

Jake is survived by three daughters;Linda(Charley) Bare, Jr. of Leigh, Deborah Held of Norfolk, Jamie(Roger) Wiese, Leigh, one son Harlan(Brandy) Held of Leigh, two sisters;Marlene Hoff of
Keensburg, Colorado, Eunice(Lee) Saunders of Waterloo, Nebraska, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty(2008), infant daughter, Teresa, two brothers;Dennis and Robert Held and two sisters;Velda Marty and Ardith Rousey.
